In recent years, the definition of a career has shifted dramatically.
The pandemic caused many knowledge workers to reconsider their relationship with and commitment to their careers. Work, particularly for Generation Z workers — some of whom began their careers remotely — appears to be less fundamental to their identities than it appeared to be for prior generations.
However, the notion that you should strive for your "dream career," one in which you can satisfy your passion while also changing the world, persists. While younger generations are beginning to think differently, many people continue to berate themselves for not landing their desired career sooner.
Employers, educators, and career coaches would be wise to assist early-career professionals in aligning their expectations with labor-market realities as well as broadening their view of what constitutes meaningful and good employment.

Working-Related Fantasies -
The phrase "dream job" is contentious.
In contrast to earlier generations of employees, several early-career professionals have been vocal about how they distinguish their identity, passion, and ambition from their day jobs.

Recruiter Adam Karpiak commented on LinkedIn, "We all need to work to survive, but it doesn't imply we should fantasise about employment."

Finding A Job In The Real World -
When you ask youngsters about their career goals, you'll find that many want positions that are historically deemed prestigious, while avoiding roles that appear less appealing.
According to an Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development survey, adolescents around the world underestimated the difficulty of pursuing jobs in fields such as medicine and law. Meanwhile, according to a 2021 paper published in the Journal of Career Assessment, less than 1% of over 3,400 US adolescents polled between 2004 and 2011 aspired to careers such as bank clerk, receptionist, or librarian.
The researchers did not inquire as to why pupils preferred some careers over others. However, there is some evidence that people regard meaningful labour as a distinct category.
High Expectations For Meaningful Work -
Rebecca Fraser-Thill, a career coach and former director of faculty engagement in Bates College's Center for Purposeful Work, told Insider in 2019 that if professionals expanded their definition of meaningful work to include things like providing for their families and making colleagues smile, the workforce would be happier overall. People wouldn't be continually looking behind them to see who was doing more noble work than them.Several folks I interviewed for "Don't Call It Quits" said they wished they could be performing work that had a greater beneficial impact on the world. One felt bad for years for assisting tech CEOs in gaining media attention and fantasised about working for a social enterprise. This person eventually quit attempting to change careers and decided that it was enough to provide for her family and do something she enjoys.
